Kurdish musician Nuarîn, who was detained upon entering Turkey, has been released under judicial supervision. During her questioning, it emerged for the first time that Turkish authorities are investigating her on suspicion of "membership in a terrorist organization," referring to the dissolved Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The investigation is based on her artistic and cultural activities at the Mesopotamia Cultural Center (MKM) in 2014.
Nuarîn has lived in Europe for eleven years and was detained on August 10 at Çukurova International Airport in Mersin upon her first return to Turkey. A confidentiality order was initially imposed on the investigation file, meaning that the reason for her detention was not known.
After police questioning was completed, the musician was brought before the prosecutor's office, which subsequently referred her to the criminal division of the magistrates' court. Following a hearing there, Nuarîn was released under judicial supervision.
Originally from the Nusaybin district of Mardin, Nuarîn began her artistic career at the MKM in Mersin in 2004. She has been living in Paris for several years, where she continues her musical work.
